There were an estimated 12,500 laundrettes on Britain’s high streets and back streets in the 1980s.

Today, it is reported, there are no more than 3,000.

Viking Velux

English is an amalgam of many languages.

The English word “window”, unlike the French “fenetre” and the German “fenster” derives from the Vikings.

Viking houses had tiny apertures from which inhabitants could look out to gauge the ferocity of the wind and weather;

thus the “wind-eye” or “window”.
